Hey all it's been a while since I checked into beater cars tribe. I just picked up a new project. It's a classic beater 1963 Volvo 122s. I'll post a pic later. Everything works on it for the most part but it needs a little TLC. I have no I idea were to find parts for it. For now I just need tune up parts and a tail light and some other trim bits. Google search only turned up a few funky sites. So I'm fishing around for some advice and hoping to connect with some classic volvo geeks out there. I also need some one th talk me out of trying to repaint it myself. (I have a make shift spray booth and spay equipment I can borrow. - just don't have any experience in automotive painting.

I would like to see a vote, on whether I should take the bolt that is lodged in my cars tire out or leave it in.

a friend in SF needs some manner of automathingie to manifest so he can continue on his miraculouos missions on behalf of the human race. the car or truck will need to make it to joshua tree and will be used for water runs and such. anyone with something functional and free or friendly cheap, contact aj in my tribe friends. you may also be able to work out a cool trade with him -- he's a seriously talented photographer, among other things.

The car in the backyard is a running 1967 Renault Dauphine(no papers) that you can have for $125.00 if you come and git it. I might even give you a discount if you take the pair.

--Went to Pick-and-pull and found a couple but I've gotta improve my toolkit before I can yank one out without spending all day there (rainy and muddy at the moment too!). So I called Greenleaf which supposedly has everything all neatly pre-pulled but they don't stock anything that's more than 10 years old. Looking for a 3-cylinder 1-liter engine out of a Geo Metro or a Subaru Justy or a Daihatsu (they're all the same). Anyone got a link??

...after ass-err-taining that the 'Luuuuv' truck was in a half foot of mud with no visable sign of tranny, I 'scused myself and resumed combing CL. Two hrs. later, got a call from this guy on the other side of Puget Sound-an F-150 that had sounded promising!
Meet the guy in the Denny's lot and realize I'd just exchanged one CL tweak for another. Deep Sigh. '82 Fordpickemup with...also...a 300in Six.-carb'd and rebuilt 3g ago. Looking good...sep-whats all this tranny drippin'down thar undr' th' radiator, Mr. and Mrs. Tweaker??
A quart a week??!-----no budge on the price and the nice burned-out couple really have to BE somewhere (..and it doesn't look like Grandma's house for cookies!)..so I shell out 400 in cash into their black hole and take the legit Title paper and a truck that reminds me of my Stepdaughter in her freshman year at Western Wa. U.

yay! diesel volvo greasewagon sat for four months. wouldn't start despite all the goats i sacrificed. But my driveway is 100 yards downhill so yee oldeee bump start to the rescue!

we'll see if two hours of running has magical like fixed the starting problem tomorrow. gotta burn out all the used veggie and run her on diesel for a bit while I figure out what's causing the starting problem.

Anyone got a line on a service manual and/or the valve clearances for an '82 Volvo Diesel? I looked at Haynes and the other usual service manuals, but they don't cover the diesel variant of this early '80's beastie..... the factory binder set costs $4,000 (you have to buy the set for all the cars of that era or some such bullcrap) so any leads on this data are much appreciated.

aloha!

time for another another winter beater

Celebrity is dead, long live the Suburban...

I've got water in the oil in the Celebrity and my wife decided we're getting a truck. So instead of plunking $1500 down on some late model truck, we paid $900 for a 1984 4-wheel-drive 3/4 ton Suburban. It's huge. We call it Moose because the horn sounds like a dying moose. Kids think it's a school bus because of all the exposed yellow metal in the interior. But it seats us, all 6 of our kids, and there's even a 9th seatbelt if I decide to be nice and NOT to tie my mother-in-law to the roof.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2534514

So at some point I'm going to try and fix the Celebrity. I need to take the intake and exhaust manifolds off and then pull the head. The previous owner did put a new head on it, but it's apparently failed somewhere. Got water in the oil, oil in the water, it's nearly impossible to start, it backfires when starting cold, and the lifters tick more until it's warmed up. Also consuming about a gallon of coolant every 200 miles. So it's sitting on the street until we have our garage sales the next 2 weekends. Then I'm bringing it back in, taking it apart, and see what it needs. Worst case, cracked block, and I can buy a remanufactured 2.5 long block for a few hundred bucks at most. Even saw one go for $312 shipped on eBay not long ago. And I think it's the intake manifold gasket because of the backfiring on startup. That would be the cheapest possible fix, and I'll see it without having to remove the exhaust manifold or head. Hopefully that's all it needs. But anyhow, at least I'm only out $450 on it thus far includiong tax and title and license plates.

The Suburban came with tags and inspection good to 11/07. That saves me $105 right there alone. It will need front brakes (pads are $16 on eBay) and it's in dire need of a tune-up (got 2 8pc sets of plugs on eBay, $12 shipped), but it hauls everyone in one vehicle and it can haul payload and tow up to 5K. Good stuff. I think we'll have this rig for quite some time. The Celebrity OTOH, might go away as soon as it's running, or else I'm parting it out. Those headlights are popular for people converting their early 80s cars to a Euro-headlight look. Best fitment is the 89-91 Blazer/Suburban front clip which is popular for swapping onto the 73-87 Chevy/GMC trucks. Headlights are worth $40 each!!!

Theres a shitload of R.V's stored in peoples yards driveways etc.
I just did the rear brakes for someone that recently purchased one of these hulking jewels.
You step inside one of these rolling monastaries, youve stepped back in time.
Straight to the 70s.
The high maintanance person that bought the one I was working on thinks he owns
something spectacular and expects me to make steak out of hamburger.
They freak out when the parts actually cost some money,
and expect me to just make it work.

I just wanted to rant

..is an '88 E250 w/ a 300" inline 6. I grabbed her off a 2 hr. sweep of Craigslist in PDX after my Suburu lost her tranny..mercifully a BLOCK from the noshoulder Ross Isl Bridge. She's an ex-Quest contractor's rig with lotsa phoneware still in the build-in toolbox. Learned more than I cared to about EFI 1st gen. from the 48 hrs. that followed, but drove her back to Tacoma. On the way I was rear-ended by a Semi in the grannie lane of I-5. Barely a dent later, she still runs the length of Puget Sound and provides a lovely kennel for our 135 lb. newfie puppy. Gun metal gray with the orig. Gold Beach Electr. Co. logo still visable. I've still got under a grand, total, into her a year later. You can fit a full band PA into the back and still have room for a 3-piece to thrash. I'm taking her to the filming of PINKS next weekend in Kent, WA.

I was driving in stop and go traffic downtown. We drove around in circles because there's lots of construction, both road and building. We were just sightseeing.

On the way back home, vanny did not want to go fast over the bridge. It didn't want to do over 40 and it didn't seem to want to switch gears. The rest of the drive home I couldn't go fast anyway due to traffic, but I could sense something was weird. When I'd take my foot off the gas, van slowed down rapidly. By the time, I was home I smelled something not quite burning but definitely overheated, so I drove van to the garage immediately because it was late Thursday and I didn't want to put it off till Monday. (Cause I KNOW how slack I am once van is parked.)

The transmission did switch gears on that part of the drive but I still had the problem with the speed going to zero quickly when I released the gas. The mechanic doesn't do transmissions so he gave me a phone number and told me to go home. When I cranked up the van, the brake pedal had no resistence at all, so I decided to leave it with him to check over instead of getting into a wreck driving home.

He called me up the next day and said they couldnt find anything wrong. The tranny was fine and the brakes good. I was leaning towards transmission on the drive home, but now I'm thinking that maybe the brakes were overheated. Any thoughts?

I have been conditioned to think of the four seasons here as "Early Summer", "Summer", "Late Summer", and "Not Summer". But I figure these months are the only time in Texas that I can get away with driving a car with a broken air conditioner and not go through a stick of deoderant a week and have to change my shirt three times a day. But anyway, I digress...

$300 picked me up a 1989 Chevy Celebrity sedan, 4-cylinder, 4-door, automatic, bench seat, column shift, white on blue. It runs. It drives. It has a new battery, new radiator, and a newly installed cylinder head and head gasket set. Just the parts alone are worth more than the $300 I paid for this thing. Everything works but the AC, and it needs a new compressor and changed over to R-134a. I've got quotes anywhere from $600 to $1200 to have that done. So *IF* this car survives the next 3 months without major incidents, I may very well treat it to a new compressor and all that stuff.

My first goal will be to detail the thing beyond recognition...what most people would call "polishing a turd". Except that I have beautiful turds...

SINKHOLE

I woke up this morning to my neighbor knocking on my windows. "They are towing your van!!!!"

I ran out to find them trying to figure out the best way to pull my precious out of a sinkhole that was formed when the watermain broke. The public safety guy said that the main was probably 50 years and ready to go and the heavy weight of Vannie selected the prime spot. Argh.

Shit happens. I realize that, but to add insult, the tow truck company want $115 for each of the tow trucks they used to pull my van out. A nice lady cop was on her phone calling every one she knew to find a formal way to deal with this. I finally got in touch with city hall to bitch them out. There is no formal arrangement between the city and the only city-used tow truck company for such an occasion. The lady cop said this was the first time in 18 years she had come across this situation. I find it hard to believe. Anyway, some bitching at city hall got the right people up to tell the tow truck company to go stuff themselves.

Van drives fine except for occasional squeel on the passenger side. I pulled sand and rock off the left wheel gadgetry. I am sure the right side must have something up in it to make the squeel. Tomorrow, I am taking it in to the mechanic to do the once over. I drove over today but they are closed due to the tropical storm. I got the number of the dept. I am going to have to deal with when I send the city for any mechanical bills.

Drove about 15 miles from home yesterday. The response was slightly off on the way there. Not enough for me to really think anything was about to happen and I'm not sure I could describe it more accurately than slightly off. Parked. When I started the van up again. I heard the faintest gurgling noise from the way back. I figured it was the fuel pump right then and hoped we'd get home okay. Got maybe two blocks when the engine cut out completely. Drifted into an available parking spot and waited for AAA to come get me. Took an hour in the oppressive tropical heat.

The garage people at first thought it was the fuel pump but called this afternoon to say it was really the the ECM and distributer module. Sigh. Then on the way home the brake warning light was on, so I suppose I'll have to change those too now. Grrrrrrrrrr.

New Beater! -If I can Get it runnin

I Buddy of mine offered me a free car If I can Get to run right. It's a Teal 97 Hyundai Accent GS 4 cyclinder rice grinder Bubble car with some custom body work and a missing window. I'm really hoping I can get it going and having a fuel efficiant alternative to my gas guzzeling 1984 F-250 truck.
So I did some diagnostics today. So this car ran fine untill someone else "tuned it up"
It runnd really rough barely holds an idle and dies when you put it in gear. I'm pretty sure it's only running on two cyclinders. I pulled the plug wires off one by one at idle and there is no change to the sound of the engine when wires 3 or 4 are removed. I verifyed this again by clipping my timing light on wires 3 and 4 -No Blinkie-. Odly enough when I pull either 3 or 4 plugs and hold it against a groung they exibit a good strong spark.

-The Plugs and wires are new and I even swaped out a plug for a new new one.
-verifyed they are the correct plugs
-All wires passed the resistance test (3500-4200 ohms)
-I pulled the fuel ingection rail -all injectors seem to squirt just fine.
-compression test: #1: 160, #2:150, #3:160, #4:170
-Odometer:120K miles
-#3 and #4 spark plugs look wet/black #1 and #2 dry/black
-It has some funky high tech cam shaft encoder instead of a distributer, (i believe the timing is nonadjustiable)
But it seems to be ideling at 0 degrees tdc to 5 degreees btdc
-the check engine light is On (does anyone out there have a code reader or manual I could borrow? or any other advice I'm all out of ideas.

thanks,
Liam

A CLEAN SWEEP! NORTH MIAMI WORKS TO RID CITY OF INOPERABLE CARS

North Miami, FL – May 12, 2006 – May is Hurricane Preparedness Month and with that in mind, the City of North Miami, under the direction of Mayor Kevin Burns, has initiated a sweep to rid the city of as many inoperable vehicles as possible. Throughout North Miami there are a number of cars or other vehicles that would be considered “junk” that can pose an environmental and public safety hazard. North Miami code enforcement officers are targeting these types of inoperable vehicles as its first step towards improving the city’s look.

“These type of vehicles give North Miami a bad image,” stated Mayor Kevin Burns, “old, rusting vehicles are eyesores but beyond that, they can cause damage to surrounding properties during hurricanes, they offer places to hide for criminals and they are an ideal home for breeding rodents.” The Mayor also pointed out that the city’s Code Enforcement and Police Departments are working together on the sweep and that we are “providing information on organizations that accept these type of vehicles for donations.”

Organizations such as America Can – Cars For Kids (1-866-835-KIDS) and Donate cars.com (1-877-2DONATE) offer free towing and a tax-deductible receipt for inoperable vehicles in any condition.

In the first four days of the operation, (April 28 – May 5, 2006), 284 junk or derelict vehicles were discovered on private property and 62 junk or derelict vehicles were discovered on the swale/public property. The property owners have been cited and they have the choice of either abating the violation or appearing before the Special Magistrate on May 23, 2006.

For additional information on this operation, please contact the North Miami Code Enforcement Division at 305-895-9832.

I just spent all day at pick and pull trying to find a replacement exhaust manifold for a 91 vw Jetta. Every single one I pulled turned out to be cracked in the same place right down the middle. I looked at 5 of them today all cracked. I found one at Ace Wrecking last week it was cracked too. Not sure where to go next.

I'm A little disappointed in VW This is the same manifold they have been using for many years and on several card, including jetta, Golf, and fox. You would think VW's engineers could do something about this problem part. Or maybe no one cares there all just driving around with cracks –Happy that there shitty little engine is making a little bit meaner sound than usual.

While not exactaly a beater car, i come in hopes of advice from fellow tinkerers and wrench turners. I am involved in an "interesting" project revolving around this car, specifically with a 5.0L. I have only base knowlege of the car at this point, for I have not even seen the car "in the flesh" given I just signed on to the project.
Ok my question is, the motor I am somewhat familair with, but anyone know how it performs in this application? The idea was to either stay with this engine, or upgrade to a 5.7L. We are looking at a two stage project, one to get the car "show" ready, then after it's initial showing, make the car into a rod. I am thinking it would be best to keep the motor it has right now rather than tax the resources from this stage of the project in trying to get a 5.7 to work in this car. Also does anyone know how the high-rise intake manifolds work on the 5.0. I have seen them plenty of times on the 5.7, but I do not know how well it will work on the 5.0. The third part of the first question (confused yet?) is whether dual double pump four barrel 600+cfm carbs would work in this 5.0 application, as much as I have done much shadetree work on most my own "beaters", this is new ground to me.
Any and all help/ advice is welcome, even if it is just to call me crazy. I tend to conceptualize big, then trim down to reality at a later point. Well thanks in advance for any help, at this point I need to sit down and talk to the project coordinator about getting at least a look at the car before I ask anything more.

I was walking down the street this morning, when I noticed a cat slinking sideways past a car. She looked scared. Belly scraping against the sidewalk, back up against the border bushes. I walked up to the car and the only thing wrong with it was that the passenger side door was crunched in as if from a wreck. Totally smashed in. Do you think the cat was getting psychic emanations or was she just prissy about cars?

Man to be reunited with stolen Corvette after 36 years

By Michael Wilson
The New York Times

NEW YORK - Alan Poster had been going through a rough time that winter. A Brooklyn native and a 26-year-old guitar salesman, he had just divorced and moved from Queens to a studio in lower Manhattan. He bought himself a flashy treat that he could barely afford but could not resist: a blue Corvette.
He had owned it for only two or three months when it was stolen from a parking garage. It was Jan. 22, 1969.
Years passed, and there were other cars, but he never forgot that 1968 Corvette. ''Probably the only car I've ever really loved,'' Poster, now 63, said in an interview last week. ''That car and my new life started together.''
The new life took him to California.
Turns out, the car followed.
Almost 37 years after the Corvette was stolen, Poster got a call last month that it had been recovered, just days before it was supposed to be shipped to a buyer in Sweden. It was flagged during a Customs Service check of the vehicle identification number, sending two New York City detectives on a long-shot search through thousands of crime reports to connect the car to its first owner.
''We can call this a miracle,'' Poster said.
The car is to be returned to Poster today. ''It's in great shape, I understand,'' Poster said. He said he does not plan to drive it much. ''I am going to be a collector of a Corvette.''
On Dec. 7 last year, Customs checked three cars being sold by a collector in Long Beach, Calif. One of them had been reported stolen in New York City on Jan. 22, 1969. No further information was available. No name of the owner, no address, not even a police precinct or borough.
The case was given to two detectives, Cliff Bieder, 44, and William Heiser, 41. They went to police headquarters in Lower Manhattan, and to Room 300, the daunting records room, to search on microfilm. If they had not found the report by Jan. 1, the car would have been shipped to Sweden, they said.
''It was the equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack, that report,'' Heiser said.
Finding Poster was easier. The detectives tracked him through the buyer of his last house in the New York metropolitan region, who said he lived in California. Poster said Bieder called him at his office.
''He said, 'You had a car stolen in '69? A Corvette? What color was it?' ” Poster recalled. ''I said, 'Blue.' He said, 'We have your car.' ''

I thought I would take advantage of the holiday to change my oil in my alley. A few months ago they began structural repairs on the bldg across the alley from mine. For some reason that I must not just presume was a little bit of backrubbing, code enforcement came down on us for having a car parked a little bit over the property line. An inch or two. Meanwhile the construction trucks are there five days a week blocking the entire alley.

So no parking here anymore. The bldg took out a contract with the towing company and when somebody does park, we call them to haul the vehicle away. Well, I don't call but the old ladies of the bldg do.

Anyway, I figured the code enforcement jackass wouldn't be driving around today and parked to change the oil right outside the door. I had just finished and went to street park when I saw the tow truck do a run in my alley. He didn't take the other REALLY illegally parked cars so I am wondering if those bitches called the tow truck on me. And then they wonder why I dont ask them if they need a rides...

Now, I'm cooking dinner. Happy thanksgiving everyone!

I have not looked underneath yet, but I think my shock absorbers are going. I am starting feel every pothole (of which there are many) on the street. That, or I am a princess driving on a bed of peas. Also, it looks like my van is leaning slightly to the right.

I have some vague recollection of a lifetime warranty that I will have to find.

I finnally drove my poor Toyota into the ground. I decided it was time for a full size truck and Was given my Grand-dad's 83' Ford F250 as an upgrade. After I put 2 replacement tires on it, re-built the carb, re- did almost the entire brake system and replaces the burnt out tranny. She was back on the road. I love free cars ;>

Anway I think I fucked something up when I rebuilt the carb. because it still idles like crap. Any one have experiance dialing theese cars in? The idle screw is all the way out and seems like it's still idling too rich. What shouls I do?

I was driving a nice 2000 Saturn for awhile. It was nice, but the person whose payments I was taking over, well, she decided she wanted more cash before she'd sign over the note. Keep in mind I only had enough to do the transfer, and was doing this as a favor to her so she could go buy a brand new car. She got her new car then got greedy. So I told her to forget it, the car got repossessed, and now I'm in the car marker.

Until yesterday, I was without a car. My van is dead. So I get on eBay and find a nice 1996 Olds Ciera. It's been through hell and back, and I got it for $162.50.

I still loudly proclaim, I AM THE KING OF CHEAP ASS CARS!

I should have it home in the next day or two, and will clean it up and post pics. Until then, here's a link to the eBay auction, my wife was kind enough to bid for me while I was out getting insurance for her and I for it.

http://search.ebay.com/4545814163

And like your Datsun, Kimric, it needs a radio. Back to eBay for that, there's dozens for $1 or less on there right now. I gotta watch those shipping charges, though. It only costs $8-$10 to ship a heavy GM radio per my experience. Some people charge $15-$20 if you don't ask first, or check the listing. So that 99-cent radio becomes a $20.99 radio pretty fast.

Anyone on here who wants those ugly 14" hubcaps is welcome to them for cost of shipping only. I hate ugly hubcaps, and would rather run around with an AK-47, naked, through a police station parking lot, before I drive a car with ugly hubcaps.

when the car outlives the key

I fear the key to my Corrolla is on its last legs ... yesterday I detected a crack in the key, and when I went to open my trunk the lower end of the key twisted at a 90 degree angle to the rest of the key. Though, operating on the logic of what can be done can be undone, I put the key back in the trunk and twisted it back straight. It works just fine in the ignition and driver's side door, though the preliminary stages of panic set in when the steering wheel is locked and the ignition offers resistence.

The lifespan of my key was significantly reduced by its previous owner (my father) who had a habit of forgetting where he parked the car and confusing other white Corrollas for this one, and then trying to open the door.

Had to join this tribe, I'm a notorious "beater lover". My current mode of transport is a 1986 Toyota Tercel 4 x 4 wagon. My second Tercel, as I have yet to find a more reliable 4 cyl. four wheel drive vehicle, and we tend to get a lot of snow here in the Kooteneys. "Christine" has had an eventful 3 years with me, including a mash-up at a local intersection. She burns a small amount of oil, and is absolutely rancid with rust........picture posted soon!

MIAMI - A vintage blue taxicab converted into a seagoing vessel and carrying several Cuban migrants was intercepted Tuesday off Key West by the Coast Guard, according to television reports.

Television footage from NBC-6 in Miami showed Coast Guard officers boarding the blue vehicle, which had been modified with a boat prow in front and appeared to have at least four migrants aboard.

But the Coast Guard declined to comment.

"Under U.S. government policy, we cannot discuss migrant interdiction operations until disposition is complete," said Petty Officer Sandra Bartlett. That process often takes days, she said.

Under U.S. immigration policy, Cubans who reach U.S. shores generally are allowed to stay while those caught at sea are usually returned.

It's not the first time Cuban migrants have converted a vehicle into a boat for a Florida-bound voyage.

In 2003, a group of migrants that tried to cross the Florida Straits aboard a bright green 1951 Chevy pickup, which Luis Grass had converted into a boat. They were intercepted by the Coast Guard and sent back to Cuba. The Coast Guard then sunk the Chevy-boat.

In February 2004 Grass made a second attempt to get to the United States illegally - this time aboard a Buick sedan powering another homemade barge.

Grass and his family had more success sticking to land: on March 12 they entered the U.S. though the Texas-Mexico border and were allowed to stay.

Several years ago I had a lucid dream--where you know that you are dreaming and can direct the activities. I thought it would be nice to fly in my van so we took off. Slowly I forgot that I was dreaming and lost control. Van and I got to a forest and we were having a hard time staying above the tree line so I just took it down to the street. I attributed this problem to its high mileage.

I eventually told my mechanic this dream. He laughed.

Anybody else have kooky kar dreams?

I just caught some little bastard tagging my van. I chased him around the block--my little squeeky voice telling him to come back and fight like a man but he just ran faster. Then, I washed the spraypaint off and hosed down the van to get the soap off.

After my neighbors were finished nosing around, I grabbed my bike to go find him but couldn't. When I got back, the lid to my gas tank was open but the cap was still on. I don't know if it was the same guy. The cap is difficult to get off so I think he probably gave up with whatever nefarious plan he had in mind. I hope he isn't planning to escalate this.

The police station is a half block from my place by the way.

dayum, it's hot--coolant spill

1990 Ford Econoline 150

I was driving around a couple days ago and realized I was making that disgusting coolant smell. I parked to have a look and I was having a significant spill. Drove home to try and figure out if it was something I could handle. Looked around but couldn't really see where it was coming from. Definitely somewhere high, on the passengers side and maybe towards the back. I went into the cab to take off the engine cover and see if I could get a better view and noticed some of the coolant had come inside. It wasn't through the cover but from under the dashboard. Figured it was probably the heater area. I talked to my favorite hand holder on the phone who confirmed it. I also figured this was going to be messy and I don't have the time this week to sit there cursing rusty car parts loose and then calling myself a damned stubborn idiot so I took it in. Since it's Miami, I didn't even have to tell them to just do a bypass, they suggested it. $85. I had this same operation done on a 80s model Ford station wagon about ten years ago in LA for soda money ($10) at a radiator shop, which I am happy to recommend if any of you need service in Culver City/Westside. They guy who took me at the garage was working there when I was a youngster. His hair is now grey and thin but I recognized him.

puller advice (cause i broke the pulley)

so today i'm trying to pull the power steering pulley on my newly acquired '85 Tercel (needs head gasket replaced) and I broke the pulley. I'm hoping for some advice on how to avoid this kind of SNAFU in the future.

A: the car is in Hawaii so shit is rusty
B: car has three pulleys on the crankshaft; AC, power steering, alternator. first pulley is the AC and it bolts onto the power steering so removal was simple, second pulley is the power steering and based upon parts diagrams it looked like it was a press-on unit so i put the puller on it and pulled until i snapped off a piece of it.

So are these ever "press on" or was i high on WD-40? how the hell can ya tell? and if it is one piece with the alternator pulley then does anyone on the beater list have any idea how to imobilize the pulley so i can get the center bolt out of the crank without turning over the engine? cause the Chilton's manual (barf) says I have to have the car in TDC and if i just put the impact wrench on that bolt the engine she sure will spin.....

in any event i'm looking at buying a new pulley from the junkyard this week. yipeee.....

1991 Aerostar, traded my 270K Buick for it about 4 months ago, have had NOTHING but problems with it. Transmission after 2 days, then steering rack began leaking (A LOT), then rear axle became noisy, now heater core is out and leaking even when heater is off. Ford came up with this brilliant plan to keep the heater core warm at all times, by installing a diverter valve that only cuts off coolant flow to the core when MAX A/C is on. It only cuts off one flow of coolant, it still comes in the core's return-to-radiator line. So I will be leaking water, fogging my windows, and steaming my interior with sweet sticky coolant at ALL times.

I'm ready for a different vehicle. Time to search for a new beater, this one has surpassed the repair cost vs. vehicle value requirements that I have.

Van and I are driving around again. Hooray for us!

It was lunchtime at Cesar's so I got him to show me all the vehicles he was working on today. One is a '73 Nova that his son is fixing up. All the stuff on the front end was gone except the wheels. They're going to sandblast it, paint it and put everything back in and turn it into a "showcar". Cesar thought it was kind of a crazy thing to do but "at least he's doing this instead of drugs." I'd love to hang around and watch it turn back into a car.

I have noticed in several of the old cars I have owned, that the vacuum advance did not work. All of them had failed diaphrams. the one in my pacer had turned into a sort of goo. i think this is due to some of the additives that are found in todays fuel. I checked the one in my Datsun and found it had failed. Big problem part is not available, so i made one from a unit off a Mercedes. I got it at a junkyard, but the funny thing was almost every car I checked had a bad diaphram. A lot of the cars were only 10 yrs old.

Not quite a beater at an extremely well maintained 125,000 miles but my Ford E150 and I have had many adventures together. Three years ago I had to fly back East to take care of my ill father and left Van in the hands of my evil ex who didn't take care of him. It's been over a year (at least) since he drove around in it, could be much longer.

I can now go fetch my beloved (not the ex). What do I need to do to get Van on the road again?

Had lots of fun fixing my friends van on the "monsters" tour.
The car kept overheating till it would boil the water out of the raidiator. Turns out that the fan "cluch" was shot. So I borrowed a drill and drilled two 1/4 holes through it and ran bolts through it to lock it up. This worked great but the thing sounded like a hovercraft when you reved the engine, but we could use the AC up hill!

Standard Equipment

I have my truck back from the mechanic, it's so not safe to drive, but I drive it anyway. At least now it stops, assuming you're able to feather the clutch to get it going, assuming you're able to start it without breaking out a can of ether, and assuming you don't get stopped by the police as soon as you exit your apartment parking lot. I relish in the death-trapness of it. Here are the top ten standard features:

1) intermittent steering, when the truck doesn't want to turn, the wheel spins freely and you don't turn, but I've temporarily disabled this feature with picture hanging wire and solder
2) better fuel mileage because some of the fuel leaks out of the front of the carburetor onto a pile of rags designed to catch it and hold it until you're ready for an engine fire
3) pretty designs on windshield created by bubbles, fog, and cracks create a nice diversion from watching the road ahead
4) door vent window glass not secured, open vent window to drop glass on pavement and deter tailgaters (don't run it over yourself because there is no spare)
5) outside mirrors held on with bolts but not nuts to allow for use as weapon of chrome destruction, slip bolt out of place to yank mirror off and beat other cars with it
6) vinyl seat is easy to get slippery with condensation from bottled water which rolls around without the optional cupholders hanging from the door sill, allowing driver to instantly become the passenger on left hand turns if his seatbelt is not fastened, mix this function with the intermittent steering for all kinds of fun
7) no adjustment for gear shift to tighten travel radius, therefore reverse gear is acheived by putting the stickshift under the glovebox and requires shift knob removal for clearance
8) 20 gallon gas tank capacity, and tank is located in the cab of the truck, immediately behind the seat, so smoke cigarettes at your own risk
9) vehicle could be nicknamed, Joseph, The Truck Of Many Colors, because it is (was) blue, with 3 shades of gray primer, with a green dash and carpet, red seat, white headliner (only half of it in place), and black and blue for the gauge panel, and some beige showing on the right rear of the bed. Oh, and it has white wheels, back bumper, and grill guard, and primer red on the front edge of the hood
10) winter driving will keep you awake due to heater hoses not in place, however a little bit of exhaust heat will escape through the gaping hole around the shifter's base, allowing you to survive, yet stay chilly and too cold to get sleepy

1970 Ford F-100 Ranger 2WD longbed pickup, blue, $406 e

I didn't own as many cars in 2002 and 2003 because I was living in a taxicab, working all the time, and had nowhere to store more than one car. I had the Century the first year, then the Celebrity, then the other Celebrity. Many other times I owned 2 or 3 cars at a time and the ones marked (*) were when I had six at once, all parked in front of my parent's house, looking like a 24-hour-a-day party. That joy lasted a week, then I got rid of the Impala (cracked heads, scrapped for $80) and Aerostar (bad transmission, still drove in 2 and R, scrapped for $100) and Tercel (cracked head, sold for parts for $150), kept the cars with loans (Dynasty and Metro) and the Diplomat. The 1993 Dynasty I owned right up until I wrecked it January 1999 and replaced it in March with the 1992 Dynasty, which is why it's so far away from the other five on that list.

You'll notice only 10 of the 49 cars on the list were $1000 or more, and only six of those were financed. I don't like financing cars, they're an expense as it is and I don't need interest adding to that. You can also freely assume that any car under $100 was picked up at an abandoned car auction, except the FREE ones. And the Voyager was also an impound sale, but being a van, it cost more to bid on.

I can go ON and ON about all the cheap ass cars I've owned. I remember every repair I made to every car, from the long week I toiled after school to change the water pump in the 1975 Gran Torino, to the brake pads done in under an hour in my parent's garage on the 1993 Dynasty, which got me grounded for a week for spilling brake dust and fluid in a small area which I cleaned but apparently not well enough.

My neighbors HATE me. My parents disapprove. My friends say, "trade that sled in for a Kia or something". But I LOVE my cheap ass cars. I'll get them from the newspaper, from friends, from auctions, from eBay (11 of those, noted in the list by e after the price), anywhere. I'll buy as many as I can afford and divide my time equally with each as I own them. I am insatiable, I need professional help, I don't care. BWUHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHA!!! Long live the cheap ass car!

hey. currently driving a'71 Plymouth Satellite that I've had for over 12yrs. I'm the fourth owner. bought it from a friend whose Polish mom had dubbed it "Sputnik" (apparently means satellite in both Russian and Polish). Drove it from Pennsylvania to California in '91. it's had several big road trips since then, including Eugene OR and Moab UT. on it's third time around the clock. already had 160,000 when I acquired it. still take it to Tahoe a couple of times a year.
previously had a '74 Buick Century Regal. great car, but unfortunately the cam shaft was already stripped when I got it. sad day when I drove it to the wrecking yard (but it did get there under its own power).
