SINKHOLE

I woke up this morning to my neighbor knocking on my windows. "They are towing your van!!!!"

I ran out to find them trying to figure out the best way to pull my precious out of a sinkhole that was formed when the watermain broke. The public safety guy said that the main was probably 50 years and ready to go and the heavy weight of Vannie selected the prime spot. Argh.

Shit happens. I realize that, but to add insult, the tow truck company want $115 for each of the tow trucks they used to pull my van out. A nice lady cop was on her phone calling every one she knew to find a formal way to deal with this. I finally got in touch with city hall to bitch them out. There is no formal arrangement between the city and the only city-used tow truck company for such an occasion. The lady cop said this was the first time in 18 years she had come across this situation. I find it hard to believe. Anyway, some bitching at city hall got the right people up to tell the tow truck company to go stuff themselves.

Van drives fine except for occasional squeel on the passenger side. I pulled sand and rock off the left wheel gadgetry. I am sure the right side must have something up in it to make the squeel. Tomorrow, I am taking it in to the mechanic to do the once over. I drove over today but they are closed due to the tropical storm. I got the number of the dept. I am going to have to deal with when I send the city for any mechanical bills.

        Rassafrassa....

I took Vanny in to the mechanics. The ride had been rough since the sinkhole incident. The bar across my steering wheel was no longer horizontal when driving straight. And when I backed out of parking spots, particularly to the left, it was very vibraty.

Diagnosis: bent Centerlink and tie rod.

We shall now see how easy it is to extract this amount from the city.

Man, it's just not my week. Okay, it's not that bad. just annoying.

I decided to change the oil on Saturday. I do this in the alley, so I like to do it fast. The damn plug would not go in right. I took it out and put it back in. At a certain depth it would just twirl. Because I'm in the alley--tickets--tow away--big trucks that want you to move out their way, I had to drive it around the corner to park, so I refilled it with oil and parked. Rode my bike to the store to get the new plug and changed the oil again. Fits tight but I will keep checkign for a few days. Old plug has no threads near the head of the plug--doh!

Garbage truck drove by, but I know the garbagemen so they didn't give me any grief. ON the way to dump the oil, I heard a noise coming from the front wheel. I started to sweat thinking those mechanics fucked something up when they fixed the tie bar. Halfway there I realized "hey I know that tinny sound". It was a loose hubcap--heart attack averted.

All this made me sing a bad song of van while I was tooling around on my bike. Even though none of this was van's fault! But today I sang a song of joy. I should write a broadway musical about my van.
