I will post the many and sundry problems with my Datsun soon and how much I like working on it in the rain.
I would like to see a vote, on whether I should take the bolt that is lodged in my cars tire out or leave it in.

Re: Datsun BLOG
Wed, January 5, 2005 - 9:48 PMThe supermarket's parking garage recently got a paintjob for their pavement. In the rain the other day, my tires made a hellish noise on the wet paint. It sounded like the tire was ripping apart (or ripping a fart maybe).

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sat, January 8, 2005 - 3:58 PMquestion:
Is the bolt merely lodged in the tread, or is it screwed into the tire?
If it's the former then obviously you should use some contractor's adhesive to secure it in place so that it doesn't fall out. If is the latter, well then the adhesive will help make sure your tire doesn't leak.

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 11:10 AMIt is so very screwed into the tire. It is not makeing as much noise as it was , as the head is getting worn off. It does not seem to leak at all. I want to take it to my friends Junk yard and de mount it so I can apply a patch from the inside. This seems to work best.
the brakes are getting on my nerves. I just did the fronts a month ago, and now I hear one of the back ones grinding.
The electric fuel pump (I replaced the old mechanical one that lasted 6 months)is putting out to much pressure so it is sort of flooding the carb ( fuel line is at the top of the sight window) I will put in a pressure reg. Auto Zone had assured me this was the right part. Yeah right.
The alternator is failing , I can't use the heater fan+ lights and radio for more than an hour.
The rubber gasket around the window leaks and moss is growing around the bottom edge of the glass on the inside.
The heater works better now that I put in a new thermostat ,back flushed the heater core and re packed the rotted foam around the heater core in its little box. I think part of the problem is that the heater core needs to be blown out, I think it is clogged so that water is passing through only some of the fins. at least the window defogs now.
The heater hoses are the origional so they are almost rotted.
More to come -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 11:47 AMSomewhere I should have a tape of my electric fuel pump dying. It was back when everyone was listening to noise and we considered putting it out on CD. Maybe I will do that anyway. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 11:29 PMDid your fuel pump sound like a dying mans heart beat (thock ....thock....thock.thock......................thock) or a small jet engine that just injested a squirrel ( reeeeeeeeuuhhhhhrreeeeeeeeeehuuuuuuuueeee)?
The first is a diaphram type, the second is the impeller type. By my vote the impeller is the more annoying of the two. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Mon, January 10, 2005 - 11:11 AMthe squirrel
Other than fear of breaking down I didn't have much problem listening to it. I used to work at record stores where the magical ability to shut out really bad music is essential. Just before a long trip, I had it fixed. My passengers hated it, except Bill (noise musician) who suggested recording it when I told him I sort've enjoyed it. I did kinda miss it. It sounded nice in that big space in the back of van.

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 11:42 PMI removed the bolt from the tire and inserted a plug as the head of the bolt had completely worn off.
I replaced the alternator with one from a 1990 pulsar. It works fine and only took a small amount of modification. I can now have heat AND the radio at the same time!
I got a fuel pressure regulator from Kragen ($20) and the fuel level went back to the center of the sight glass in about 30seconds. The acceleration is still a bit jerkey ,so I think something is clogging the accelerator pump. Might have had something to do with my hand cut carb gasket.
The rear brake shoes will not be in till the eleventh so I hope they are the right ones, not much left on the old ones.
My car is now more than a third of a century old. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, January 11, 2005 - 12:01 AMMy first car was a '65 Datsun 411 (~1100 engine). Burned a quart/100 mi., but it was cute as a button.
Just figure on packing a spare starter & alternator. At least they're easy to reach when changing out. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, January 11, 2005 - 12:27 PMSo called pressure regulator clogged or somthing , as I was going over the Bay Bridge. I barely made it.
I by-passed the regulator for the trip home. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sat, January 15, 2005 - 8:49 PMThat's no picnic, with no shoulder. I stopped dead on Blood Alley (Doyle Drive) in my TR-3 once. Took a very very long 30 seconds to reattach the accelerator linkage. Love those dual carbs.

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 16, 2005 - 10:56 AMYeah the new one.
The damn thing has a little rubber seal that the fuel passes through , it would appear that the rubber swelled and allowed only a very small amount of fuel to pass (this took les than 24 hrs). I took the thing apart and found it was nearly impossible to get as the seal, as it was press fitted in under this washer. I had to use the dremel to remove the metal that was peened down over the washer to get the damn thing out. I routed the the rubber bit out and replaced the mess and peened it back in (it really should have been a snap ring to begin with) it seems to work fine now. The new alternator is doing well too.
Note I had bypassed the reg with a ball point pen tube, Snoop would be proud. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 16, 2005 - 11:18 AMAre those seals supposed to swell up enough to block flow?
By the way, the podiatrist I used to take my Dad to used dremels for grinding down toenails that were impossible to clip--should anyone here ever have an issue with thick toenails. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, January 16, 2005 - 6:55 PMStay agile by biteing off your own toenails! and money too!
I dont think the seal was supposed to swell, it was probably not the right type of rubber. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Mon, January 31, 2005 - 12:38 PMThe carb still acts like the accellerator pump is clogged but otherwise it runs fine.
The weather was good so the datsun got a touch up on it's paint job. I stripped all the flakey old paint with a Scrubby pad. looks much better. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, February 22, 2005 - 11:00 AMAhh, you don't know the half of it :<)
I might be able to finish painting the car today since it seems we might have a day or so without rain.
The windshield has developed a leak near the middle on top, so as DEVO would say "it drips on down from above". -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, February 22, 2005 - 1:53 PMMaybe the car is trying to tell you it wants a flowerpot hat? -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Thu, April 28, 2005 - 10:30 AMYeah I should get around to that, I may replace the dead radio first. It has not worked for weeks. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 6:45 PMThe datsun turned 200,000 the other day,n the way to the last night of the Odeon I believe. It could be 300,000 it's sort of hard to tell.
Other news is that the extended rains have really rotted out the floor boards. I went through a large puddle and my feet got wet. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Mon, May 30, 2005 - 11:31 PMIm gonna have to ct the wires to the radio untill I have time to put in a new one. it appears that it is on but no sound comes out. It keeps killing the battery. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 7:18 PMI ended up having to replace the alternator I got one out of a mazda 606 that was about the right size and modified the mounting bracket to fit it. installed a radio, new speaker and fixed the rattle in the door and fixed the lock so the key would work.
The clutch stoped working about two days ago. the slave cylnder was leaking like mad and would no longer work, Kragen gave me the wrong parts to rebuild it but the boot fit and after polishing the rust out of the sleeve the old seal seemed to fit ok the one in the box was too small. I believe it was leaking around the inside of the seal where it rides on it's pin, so I put a O ring behind it and It works fine now. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, October 2, 2005 - 12:00 AMThe clutch only worked for about two weeks, and I had to replace the slave cylinder, the whole thing works much better now.
There has been some sort of persistent electrical problem with the ignition that I am having a hell of a time traceing. And I get a really wierd smell when I turn on the heater. Also the headlights died but thats just the fuse mount. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, October 2, 2005 - 8:53 AMA really weird car smell? You? It must be something from nature that got in there for you not to recognize it. It rained a lot this year, no? Could it be mold or dried, dead mold? -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, October 2, 2005 - 11:18 AMNo it's a wierd chemical smell, it may be the foam I repacked the heater box with a couple of years ago. It's nasty so I am going to have to take it apart before winter. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Fri, October 7, 2005 - 12:35 AMReplaced some wires but still have not traced the ignition problem. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Fri, October 7, 2005 - 9:35 AMDid you give any artist types rides in your car? Burners usually leave a smell after. I gave a hipster from a place called mama buzz a ride, I'm still trying to get the patchouli smell out. check the glove box for dirty panties, dont ask me why, but women always leave them in there. I've found 5 sets and one net stocking in my glove box. (oops that was mine) hopr you find the source of the smell good luck. -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, October 11, 2005 - 3:40 PMThe datsun has not been to BM ince 99 I don't think it could handle more rust. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 6:05 PMI replaced the distributor cap ,and this seems to have gotten rid of the ignition problem.
I got to do some caulking and fiberglassing if I want to stay dry this winter. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, November 6, 2005 - 8:29 PMO'rapture. I have patched all the rust holes in the floor of the car(the ones I could find) some wer several inches accross. I am debateing just fiberglassing the damn floor. It's more rust than metal. I even cleaned the interior (well the front half anyway) and the windows. i'm not so sure about the windows tho' now I can't see them, so how can I tell if they are down? -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Tue, December 20, 2005 - 5:19 PMI went and got a "fast pass" yesterday (bridge toll thingy).
they did notknow what a "Datsun" was, there was no entry for it on the computer. AMC was not there either. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, February 12, 2006 - 11:31 AMi tried to tune the datsun the other day. It would appear that the timing chain has jumped, as I can't rotate the distributer far enough to set the timing! It has no power and acts like it has bad plugs whn you step on the gas (misfires)
I also noticed a odd sound from the back of the engine that sounds like a knocking. It is inside the engine.
And just as I got the heat to work again!
If I was in australia I would have got this complete engine with turbocharger that this guy was selling. it was from his Datsun and it was (and looked) totaly homemade. it looks like I found a engine in San leandro (a bit closer). -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Sun, February 12, 2006 - 11:50 AM(Tribe is all screwed up today. It says I'm on and then it tells me I have just joined Beaters when I try to reply, even though I just replied in another thread!!!!)
We had a car that had a turbocharger added to it and we couldn't get all the paperwork for it. I forget the details but we drove around in it for a year in California then junked it without the state giving us a fine or anything. There are weird roolz in CA but just as many loopholes.
I'm sorry you have to get the datsun a new ticker. :( -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Mon, February 13, 2006 - 5:38 PMI got a low mileage used engine for $380.00 Vinnie is going to put it in. I never really git rid of that ignition problem I think it might have been timing problems all along. -
-
Re: Datsun BLOG
Sat, February 25, 2006 - 12:17 PMVinnie delivered the datsun yesterday! The ignition problem seems to have gone away with the old engine, so it may have been timing.
I am a bit dissapointed in Vinnie with the condition of the interior of the car. Vinnie pointed out that it looked like crap when I brought it in (which was true) but I was dissapointed anyway.
I could not have gotten through this troubled time without the support of Margret. She had to endure my daily calls ,in tears, of my seperation anxiety with my car. I almost cry when a piece falls off! -

Re: Datsun BLOG
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 11:53 AMThere is so much I have to wrie here. I will just tackle them one at a time.
I rebuilt the door lock as it was so worn that when you turned the key you would have to kick the door while pulling on it to get it open. This got to be pretty embarassing so I finaly fixed it. I also had to push out the kicking dent in the door. The gage cluster stopped lighting a few weeks ago. And some times #4 cylinder is slow to fire when the engine is warming up , but it has not done this for a couple of weeks. I want to put the head from my old engine on this used one in the car presently, as I think the valves are worn.
