I was driving in stop and go traffic downtown. We drove around in circles because there's lots of construction, both road and building. We were just sightseeing.
On the way back home, vanny did not want to go fast over the bridge. It didn't want to do over 40 and it didn't seem to want to switch gears. The rest of the drive home I couldn't go fast anyway due to traffic, but I could sense something was weird. When I'd take my foot off the gas, van slowed down rapidly. By the time, I was home I smelled something not quite burning but definitely overheated, so I drove van to the garage immediately because it was late Thursday and I didn't want to put it off till Monday. (Cause I KNOW how slack I am once van is parked.)
The transmission did switch gears on that part of the drive but I still had the problem with the speed going to zero quickly when I released the gas. The mechanic doesn't do transmissions so he gave me a phone number and told me to go home. When I cranked up the van, the brake pedal had no resistence at all, so I decided to leave it with him to check over instead of getting into a wreck driving home.
He called me up the next day and said they couldnt find anything wrong. The tranny was fine and the brakes good. I was leaning towards transmission on the drive home, but now I'm thinking that maybe the brakes were overheated. Any thoughts?

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, October 28, 2006 - 10:01 AMSounds like brakes if its that burnt chalky smell. as far as the shifting sometimes the modulator ges out they're 20 buck and plug in to the trans with 1 bolt. theres a vacuam hose that goes to it from the intake manifold. You usually replace it when you replace the filter & fluid on a trans service. -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, October 28, 2006 - 11:03 AMThanks Vinnie. The smell wasn't too burnt but chalky I guess describes it. Now what the devil froze them like that?!?!?! -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, October 28, 2006 - 11:34 AMEther you had your foot riding on the brake or when it heated up, old brake fluid absorbs moisture especially in humid climates so its nessesary to flush your brake fluid sometimes. -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, October 28, 2006 - 11:36 AMOh yea almost forgot, the moisture in the fluid expands and starts to push on the brakes if not lock them up.

Sat, October 28, 2006 - 12:27 PMAgree with all below; I'd still change fluid/filter before replacing any parts... -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Tue, October 31, 2006 - 8:56 AMThanks fellas! I have no driven much but seems okay so far. I'm pretty sure I changed the fluid a couple years ago, but it is rather humid here--which makes Margaret very cranky.

Re: transient ischemic attack
Fri, December 1, 2006 - 9:19 PMUgh. I think Santa is going to have to bring me a transmission this year.
Drove a bit farther than normal this week. The engine noise would be louder until it switched into a higher gear--then the purr I am used to, and today it seemed to have a harder time switching into the higher gear. No jerkiness, just took longer.

Re: transient ischemic attack
Wed, December 13, 2006 - 5:59 PMYou could always do a fluid change on the tranny, I would ask Vinnie about any additives you could add. -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 12:35 PMI'm going to take him into the tranny doctors on Monday and see what they say.
The fluid definitely needs to be changed. How do you guys feel about that? I've heard people say that the cleaning agents in new tranny fluid tends to clean the tranny too well. The grit and junk gets knocked out of the little places where they are keepign the transmission in place. -

Thu, December 14, 2006 - 12:53 PMIsn't a tranny doctor, someone that gives sex changes? -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 6:42 PMI love Van just the way he is, but if he wants to get a sex change I'll support him every step of the way.

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 1:29 AMI would never put fluids into Margaret-the-Van that in any way mention something like "for older/high milage..blahblah" Seals HATE the stuff...and will loosen themselves into a state of puking parts of bottom-end.
Beyond that, I'm a long-time dutch boy, so I can't judge. If you love Vanny, and don't mind being dissed as a hag by unfeeling Dodgeballs, love 'im up! We're here for you. -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 8:28 AMI am considering putting this off for another week. My Mom failed her post op check up so I have to drive her back to the doctor on Thurs. for another checkup and then there's Xmas where I have to drive her to her brother's house to get interrogated by relatives who are uninterested in our well-being 364 other days of the year.
Mom has an eye fluid situation in case you are wondering, but her tranny is fine. -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 9:13 AM- Don't let anyone but a trained professional change your mothers' filters. Advise on high-milage fluid stands.
- Don't let your reletives put your mother up on the rack. That's ASC country, as well
Hugs. -

Re: transient ischemic attack
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 4:13 PMI bet if you look on line , you can get a cheat sheet for your mom so she can bone up before she takes the test again. -

Sun, December 17, 2006 - 1:39 PMAnd, no, I didn't refer to your Mom as a beater;)
